ASTM A780 – Practice for Repair of Damage and Uncoated Areas of Hot-Dip Galvanized coatings

  1. Zinc-based Soldiers
  2. Zinc-Rich Paint
  3. Zinc Spray Metalizing

Required Coating Thicknesses for the Repair Area are specified in American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standards:

  • A780 – Standard Practice for Repair of Damaged and Uncoated Areas of Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings
    • Galvanized coating repair thickness requirements vary, depending on the application method and repair material used
    • Materials:
      • Zinc
      • Aluminum
      • 85 Zn/15 Al
  • A123 – Specification for Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Coatings on Iron and Steel Products.
    • Restrictions:
      • Repair area must be ≤1” in its narrowest dimension
      • The total repairable area can be no more than ½% of the accessible surface area to be coated, or 36 in² per short-ton of piece weight – whichever is less
  • A153 – Specification for Zinc Coating (Hot-Dip) on Iron and Steel Hardware
    • Repair Restrictions for Small Parts, Hardware & Fasteners:
      • Total repair area for touch-up of bare spots can be no more than 1% of the area to be coated, excluding threaded areas of the piece
      • Bare spots and touch-up are not allowed on threaded areas
  • A767 – Specification for Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement
    • Repair Restrictions for Reinforcing Steel:
      • Repair area can be no more than 1% in any 1’ (foot) length, not including sheared or cut ends
